We’ve all heard of misogyny: the hatred of women, but have you ever heard of misandry? No? Neither has most spell check software. Misandry is the hatred of men. Comments like “men are pigs” or “men are dogs” or “men are scum” are misandric. Most people take these statements as jokes or good-natured ribbing. Honestly, sometimes they are. Sometimes it’s all in good fun to say “Blacks are pigs” or “homosexuals are dogs” or “jews are scum”, too. Still, reading those words probably made your blood boil, right?

There is no justification for society to be hypersensitive to degrading comments about every single group EXCEPT men. No justification, that is, unless you consider how oppressive and privileged men have always been, right? Men deserve it, right? After all, men have always sat around, smoked cigars, drank brandy and lived in luxury while women fought the wars, mined the coal and gave up their seats on lifeboats for their tyrannic male overlords.

…or not.

Chivalry, in the context of modern gender politics, refers to the protected status of women and the expectation that a man NEVER hit a woman.

“A real man never hits a woman”
“End violence against women”
…these phrases are repeated endlessly in our society, despite the fact that men are the overwhelming majority of murder and assault victims. In fact, in Canada, women are even less likely than children to be murdered. We feel that prioritizing the safety of the demographic that is already the safest is indefensible and tremendously harmful. People are so worked up about defending women from harm that a mere accusation of harming a woman will often be all the evidence that the law and the  public need to mete out punishment to the accused, provided the accused is male. If a woman is accused of harming another woman, well, you know; that’s different.

This rush to judgement undermines the presumption of innocence; that fundamental right within western law guaranteeing that the accused be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Rather, men accused of hitting women, raping women or even raising their voice to women are assumed guilty (and a particularly heinous guilt at that) until they prove their innocence. With public attitude so stacked against men, false allegations of rape or assault are bound to become more frequent, since nobody really cares about getting the facts straight when it comes to protecting women.

Even if a falsely accused man DOES prove his innocence, his reputation will quite likely be tarnished forever, whereas women who make false allegations are rarely ever punished or stigmatized in the slightest.

While female circumcision is known as FGM (female genital mutilation) and condemned by the UN and illegal in most first-world countries, male circumcision is perfectly legal. People who oppose this double standard are known as “intactivists”.

We’ve all seen the ads about protecting women and children from abusive men in their own home, but there are really no ads about protecting men and children from abusive women. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse is committed by both genders, but ad campaigns only focus on male perpetrators and largely on female victims.

Men are Victims of abusive partners almost as frequently as women, but their complaints (if they even step forward to make them) are not taken nearly as seriously. Though men are typically larger and stronger than women, women are more likely to use weapons, poisons or attack when their victims are asleep or vulnerable. The point is, domestic violence is terrible regardless of gender.

MRAs argue that male-on-female violence is NOT more egregious a crime than male-on-male violence, female-on-male violence or female-on-female violence. Violence is violence and abuse is abuse. Full stop. Additionally, one’s right to defend themselves from violence is one which transcends gender.

*According to statistics Canada, as of 2010, there are 593 shelters for abused women operating accross Canada. In March 2013, the only shelter in Canada for men closed due to a lack of funding.

*One source lists 286 scholarly investigations: 221 empirical studies and 65 reviews and/or analyses, demonstrating that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their spouses or male partners. The aggregate sample size in the reviewed studies exceeds 371,600.

*Cal State Psychology Professor Martin Fiebert has assembled a bibliography of 175 scholarly investigations: 139 empirical studies & 36 reviews &/or analyses, which demonstrate that women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships w/ their spouses or male partners.

*Psychologist John Archer reviewed hundreds of studies & concluded:

*An international survey of violence between dating partners in 16 countries concluded:

*According to “Stop Abusive & Violent Environments” (SAVE): A 10,000 household survey shown 11% of respondents said they’d been falsely accused. 81% of the falsely accused were men.

*The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention report,
“In non-reciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases. Reciprocity was associated w/ more frequent violence among women, but not men.”
